JAKARTA - Denmark's men's singles, Victor Axelsen, stepped off the tournament in the third set while playing against Hong Kong's Huang Yuxiang in the first round of BCA Indonesia Open Superseries Premier (BIOSSP) 2016. He ended the match with defeat, 16-21, 21-16, 8-4 at Senayan, Wednesday (1/6).

Axelsen coach, Kenneth Jonassen, said his player should quit early due to respiration problem (cough). Axelsen, the fourth seeded player, couldn't continue the match which at the time was having equal points.

As a result, Jonassen decided to take Axelsen out from the court due to his physical condition which burdened him to resume.

"Since last week, he has had cough. We hope he recovers. Actually on last Monday we were quite happy with his better condition. However, the following day his physical condition was worse. We actually took a risk to allow him to play,"Jonassen said.

Jonassen stated that the cough is quite severe. Although he was good enough to continue, Jonassen didn't have the heart to let him play with his cough.

"We prepared the best we could and tried our best, but you can't sacrifice your health, we are being realistic," he added.

As a result, Axelsen is eliminated in the first round of the US$900 thousand tournament. Next, Axelsen is still considered to participate at the Australian Open next week.

Denmark coaching team expressed their concern with Axelsen's condition. The cough he has been suffering for a week should get further examination.

"Doctor suggested that he take a rest, but we will find second opinion to make sure his health condition is not only measured based on that diagnosis so we can decide what we will do next," he ended.
