2016 Rio de Jenairo Olympic gold medalist became the only Indonesia's representative reaching to the final round after in the semi-final match last night, Saturday (17/6), managed to stun a Malaysian pair, Chan Peng Soon/Peck Yen Wei, 21 -13 and 21-14.
"We know Chan is an experienced player, we've been studying this new pair match videos. Chan did a lot of pitch covering. Although it was fierce, they kept on receiving pressure and they were unable to get out from it," Liliyana said after the game.
"We are quite satisfied with today's performance, we played with focus and concentration. I could reduce my error which is usually occurred quite many. The opponent was difficult to develop their game. Hopefully we can perform better tomorrow," said Tontowi.
So far, Tontowi/Liliyana have not been able to win the Indonesia Open title. Their best achievement is being a finalist in 2011 after losing by Chinese pair Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei, and being finalists in 2012 after losing by Thai's doubles, Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam.
"Definitely, we want to be a champion, but we want to focus and not to think about becoming a champion tomorrow. The most important is to keep the communication and strategy solid," said Tontowi.
In the final match tomorrow, the sixth seeded Tontowi/Liliyana will challenge China's top seeded, Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen. The record for both sides’ shows Zheng/Chen leads 1-0.
"The tomorrow's opponent is not easy, they are young players who are on fire, high spirit, and they have speed and power. We should be able to apply the right pattern. Hopefully we can play better and present the trophy for Indonesia," Liliyana concluded.
